Audi's first attempt at making a super car to challenge the fast Italian brands, (Ferrari and
Lamborghini) resulted in the Audi R8 which was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show in 2006. It is
constructed with an aluminium body leading to a very light and rigid racer. This mid-engined, two
seater comes in regular guise with a 4.2 litre V8 with 420hp or, for those who prefer their Audi with
a little more Lamborghini 'soul', the 5.2 litre V10 with 525hp.
As Audi owns Lamborghini it didn't
take much convincing to allow the R8 to borrow the Gallardo LP560-4's V10 power plant. However
that isn't all the two share as the R8 also comes with Quattro permanent all wheel drive providing
the Audi with effortless traction regardless of road conditions. The R8 V10 will hit 62mph in 3.9
seconds and on to a top speed of 196 mph while the V8 takes 4.6 seconds to hit 62mph and tops out
at 188mph.
