BMW X-Series X5
Salt Lake City, UT

South Salt Lake police have released the name of the man who was killed when the small, white Hyundai he was driving was hit by a stolen BMW in the area of 2500 South and State Street late Sunday night. The victim has been identified as Micheal Green, 36, of Farmington. South Salt Lake Police Public Information Officer Gary Keller said it was a “horrific” crash that occurred at about 11:52 p.m., when the stolen BMW was traveling on State Street at a high rate of speed. Keller said the BMW hit the Hyundai, “basically cutting the small white car in half and killing the driver.” The debris field was so extensive, all four lanes of State Street as well as both on ramps to I-80 were closed until just after 6:30 a.m. Monday. “The debris field covers all four lanes of State Street, and all the area under the freeway overpass is a crime scene,” Keller said early Monday. “So we have State Street blocked from about 2300 South down to 2500 South. If you’re traveling that way this morning, you should take an alternate route.” Salt Lake City Police Lt. Craig Gleason said the BMW was initially spotted at the Wasatch Inn, 1416 S. State St., by a Metro Gang Unit officer who recognized it as a stolen vehicle and called for assistance. PIO Keller said the BMW was occupied by two males and a female. “We have an idea who the driver might be, but when police got there, everyone was out of the vehicle,” Keller said. Investigators will get DNA from the air bags to identify where each individual was seated. All three suspects, who are in their mid-20s, are in custody and were taken to a local hospital with injuries. One of the suspects had fled, but he called police himself because he was injured and needed help. Police are not releasing their names at this time because charges have not been filed yet. Charges are to be screened by the Salt Lake County district attorney. “This was a terrible crash,” Keller said. “I haven’t seen one this bad, probably in my whole career. The small white car was basically cut in half. The driver was thrown from the car. The engine and the front end was taken off the BMW.” “When you see this type of carnage, it’s unbelievable.”
